Rob Ford’s niece, Krista Ford, has gotten herself into some twitter trouble with an ill-considered post advising woman that, to avoid being sexually assaulted, they should:
“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore”

When Mayor Rob Ford succeeded in contracting out garbage pick-up in the western half of Toronto to Green For Life (“GFL”), a private garbage company, he said that GFL could do the work more efficiently, and critically for taxpayers, less expensively (to the tune of $11 million per year), than city workers. Needless to say, Toronto-area lefties were having none of that.

This is only indirectly a post about Cuba. I actually like Cuba, and feel quite bad for its citizens. This post is really about Jagrup Brar, the BC NDP’s Small Business Critic (“critic” being the operative word), and apparently one of the last remaining slobbering admirers of Castro’s Cuba. In a Radio India interview, he is reported to have said about Cuba:
“[T]he gap between rich and poor is not there or very minimal. Nor is there an individual who doesn’t have a place to sleep or food to eat. Nor is there a child who goes to bed hungry.”
He went on at length about Cuba’s “free” education system, and its peerless “free” public health care network, where, he claimed, doctors are available at any hour and will dispense “any medication you need”.
There is no crime in Cuba, declared Mr. Brar. At least, he didn’t see any. And that’s what his Cuban “guide” said.
“He told me that the ‘rat race’ that exists in our society doesn’t take place there. He said they enjoy their lives and live their lives to the fullest. That’s the type of life there,” said Mr. Brar. “People roam free in the streets whether in the cities or the villages. I witnessed young women in the streets catching rides or waiting for the bus.”

Sometimes you’ll read a story in the paper and say to yourself: “Is this a joke? Can people really be this stupid?” That was my reaction to the story about a conservative lobby group in the US who alleged that this skittles ad, featuring a woman making out with a Walrus, promoted bestiality. According to Monica Cole, the spokesperson for the group One-Million Moms:
“This human is doing something with an animal that doesn’t seem natural. Even though they weren’t in an actual sexual act, it gets your mind going and thinking things you shouldn’t be thinking.
“They’re taking lightly the acts of bestiality.”

Let’s get this out-of-the-way. This post isn’t about Senator Joyce Fairbairn. As you may have read, Senator Fairbairn was diagnosed, in February of this year, as being legally incompetent owing to dementia brought on by Alzheimer’s disease. Obviously, Senator Fairbairn’s illness is a sad outcome for a woman who, all joking about senators aside, has spent a good chunk of her life serving her country. This post isn’t about her.

Recent polls are showing that the Quebec election is turning into something of a horse race going into the last week of the campaign. The last poll, prepared by Leger Marketing for the Journal de Montreal, has the Parti Quebecois (PQ) a scant 5 percentage points ahead of the Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ), who are themselves almost neck-and-neck with Jean Charest’s Liberals (see Eric Grenier’s usual excellent analysis over at threehundredandeight.com). [Update: CROP has a poll out in today’s La Presse showing the CAQ 5 percentage points behind the PQ, from 9 percentage points in their last poll.]

Republicans, Snooki and a Senator… sounds like the punch line to a terrible joke. Here are some of the fluffier stories from last week.

In light of the fiasco that is the Parti Quebecois‘ proposal
to turn Quebec into arguably the least tolerant jurisdiction in North America to impose controversial restrictions on language and religious displays, I thought this older piece might be appropriate. It arose from this story about a Muslim woman who was told to remove her Niqab if she wanted to attend a French language/civics class, because, among other things, the teacher couldn’t see her lips to ensure she was learning French properly. In response, she filed a human rights complaint with the Quebec human rights tribunal. Enjoy!
I’m never sure who to cheer for in these cases.

Some of you will, no doubt, have been following the Lori Douglas hearing. For those of you who haven’t, Lori Douglas is the Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba whose husband posted pictures online of her “engaging in bondage, playing with sex toys and performing oral sex” and, apparently, peeing on grass (for a full description, accompanied by David Lat’s editorializing, but not the pictures themselves, see the Above the Law’s post on the topic). He also, apparently, tried (without her knowledge) to arrange for a client, Mr Chapman, to have sex with her. Mr. Chapman has since complained and Justice Douglas has been dragged before the Canadian Judicial Council (the “CJC”), and threatened with removal from the bench.
Suffice to say, it’s a sordid story.

In a follow-up to this morning’s “This is ONE of the Reasons why Johnny Can’t read…” post on the general lack of common sense in our public schools, here’s another “Classic Bob” rant from last December, responding to the story of a 7-year-old boy who was threatened with a suspension for “sexual harassment” for kicking another boy in the groin, after that boy allegedly stole his gloves and choked him. In fact, according to the boy’s mother, the school principal went so far to accuse the boy of “sexual assault”.
